7 Things About Me & My Fav Blogs

Apparently, I am versatile! I was awarded the Versatile Blogger Award...Yay me! Thank you Safiyah of Safiyah Heals for considering me. Part of the whole versatile shtick is telling 7 things about me and provide 15 of my fav blogs. SO, here it is:

7 THINGS ABOUT ME:

1) I've raised my 2 cubs (21 year old sun and 14 year old daughter) single handedly. Even when I was with the baby-daddy, or my late husband, I was still the head of household. They say, the one with the purse strings holds the power.

2) I home-schooled both my cubs. I believe in free thinking and Being. Institutions (as they are currently structured) kill creativity and freedom, in my opinion.

3) I love french pastries. When I say love...I mean LOVE! I have a SERIOUS weakness. Ooo la la!

4) I am a self-published author of 3 books. 2 of Sufi poetry (Impregnated with Desire and Divan of the Infidel) and 1 parenting book for healing difficult behaviors in children (Kinnecting: Healing the Difficult Child with the Creative Arts).

5) I was married once (not to my cubs father) for only 2 intense transformative years, then my husband, who was also my Capoeira Master, was shot and killed. May his soul find peace.

6) I teach healing movement modalities (Kundalini Yoga, Capoeira Angola, Pilates, Dance Movement Therapy). It's not work when you love what you do...

7) I LOVE to commune (spend sacred time) with Loves, Lovers and Beloveds over chai tea. It's my favorite thing to do...talk and gaze.

15 OF MY FAV BLOGS (sorry...could only think of 8 for now. I will add more as they come to me)

BEAMING & CREATING THE FUTURE

Greetings Rhythm & Breath Yogis!

Are we ready to create our reality one breath at a time?!
Lets do this...2013 is ours. Its time!!!

I suggest you begin to make a "vision board." A vision board is a visual of the objects, goals, or life condition you would like to manifest. You can use images and words from magazines or ones printed from the internet. You may add your own art, and/or pictures of your family (as you can see I have my cubs in the center with me. The pic is 10 years old but they will always be my babies. And the things I would like to manifest surrounding). It is your own personal art project. Take your time as you are clarifying what it is you are trying to accomplish over the next 40 days and into 2013. You may use it during the meditation as an object to gaze at when you lose your focus, or you may hang it somewhere where you will see it every day...next to a mirror, on the refrigerator or on the front door.

PART ONE

BEGIN
Start in easy pose, with your legs crossed. Sitting tall on your sit bones. You may sit on a pillow, or in a chair, if you are not able to sit with your legs crossed. Rub your hands together and bring them to prayer pose. Pressing your thumbs against your sternum chant the ADI MANTRA on two breaths (refer to my YOUTUBE videos and BANDCAMP for details).

Ong Na Mo Guru Dev Namo (I bow to the Divine teacher within)

FOCUS
Eyes are closed and rolled up and in towards your third-eye brow point.

MUDRA
Hands are in Gyan Mudra wrists resting on the knees with your arms relaxed. They dont HAVE to be straight.

PRANAYAM
Inhale sipping air through a rounded mouth, long and deep. Then close the mouth and exhale through your nose. Completely filling and emptying the lungs on the inhale and the exhale.

Continue for 7-15min.

PART TWO
Inhale through the nose and hold onto the breath. Meditate on Zero. Bring all negative emotions, feelings, dis-ease to zero. Think in this way:

"All is zero; I am zero; each thought is zero; my pain is zero; my obstacle is zero."

When you cant hold the breath any longer, fully exhale through the nose and repeat. Create a comfortable rhythm with the breath. Repeat. Create a comfortable rhythm.

Continue for 7-11min.

PART THREE
Think of the quality/condition you most desire for your complete contentment. Summarize it into a single word such as "wealth" "health" "success" "knowledge." It has to be one word. Lock into that word and all aspects and facets of it. Inhale through the nose and hold onto the breath...beam the "word" in a continuous stream. Exhale through the nose and repeat.

Continue for 5-15min.

TO FINISH

Inhale and move your shoulders, arms and spine. Then stretch your arms up, spreading your fingers wide and breathe deeply a few times.

NOTES
After clearing the mind of other distracting thoughts and attachements, it has tremendous capacity and crativity when focused and beaming. Use that beaming faculty. Become still and project the mindto create your future and your relationship with the world. The best way to practice this is on an empty stomach.

I guess that means I will be doing this early in the AM!
So there it is! Individually...collectively lets make our dreams a reality.

Conclude by reciting the Warrior Healers Affirmations

TUNE OUT:
Rub your hands together and bring them to prayer pose.
Chant SAT NAM (Truth is my Idenity) 3xs on one breath.
Bring your hands in prayer mudra up to your forehead and bow to the floor to seal the work in your frontal lobe.

And there it is! Individually and collectively...lets make our dreams our reality. CHEERS!

And thank you GOD in advance from all of us...

Meditation for Self Love

It's easy to say that you love your Self. But do you love your Self enough to: receive and give love, establish healthy boundaries, really know how you want and need to be loved, and be able to explain what that is like? Do you love your Self enough to enjoy the solitude of your own company? Do you love your Self enough to live your life Self-actualized and make your dreams manifest? These are all questions that we are going to explore over the next 40 days.
Yogic science calls for meditation to be for a certain amount of days and a certain amount of time to achieve desired effects:
40 days-changes a habit
90 days-confirms the habit
120 days-the new habit is who you are
1000 days-you have mastered the new habit
You will meditate daily on your own time over the next 40 days, anytime of the day before midnight, although there are optimum times for meditation. Read more here:
Thoughts, impressions and challenges are shared in strict confidence on a private discussion thread through FACEBOOK. To learn more or to join us, FB friend me! As your consciousness unfolds and you burn your karma, please use Rhythm & Breath as your support system to help you realize the establishment of your daily spiritual practice and the healing of deep seeded wounds of this and past lifetimes. Its really an amazing process, just remain open and dont lose faith!
Here we go!
BEGIN:
We begin in "easy pose" which is not so easy, especially for men, who are usually tight in the hips, or knees. Your legs are crossed one in front of the other. If you are unable to sit comfortably in this position, you can prop your buns on a pillow which helps alleviate some of the discomfort. And/or lean up against a wall. This position IS NOT HALF OR FULL LOTUS POSITION.
Every session begins with the tuning into our highest consciousness and the prophets, gurus and sages of the ages with the ADI MANTRA: ONG NA MO GURU DEV NA MO. (This means that I bow to the Divine Wisdom within, and another translation is I bow to the Divine teacher within).
Rub your hands together. Cross your right thumb over your left if you are male, left over right if you are female. Press your thumbs against your sternum in prayer pose and chant the ADI MANTRA on 2 breaths. Pay close attention to the breathing demonstrated in the video. We chant this 3xs.
MUDRA:
Place your left hand on your knee palm facing up and your right hand on your heart center.
SAY:
"My Heart, I love you."
Place your right hand on your eyes. (Your left hand remains on your knee the whole time).
SAY:
"My Eyes, I love you."
Place your right hand on top of your head.
SAY:
"My Head, I love you."
Place your hand on your belly.
SAY:
"I love you."
Place your palm on your right knee (just like your left).
SAY:
"I love you."
REPEAT.
Continue for 11 minutes. While you find your rhythm consciously send your Self the most nurturing, loving, warm and fuzzy love you can possibly generate. This is your big opportunity...the next 40 days is ALL about you!
TO CLOSE:
To finish bring your hands in Gyan Mudra. Thumbs pressed against your index finger. Other fingers are straight. Wrists are resting on your knees.
TUNE OUT:
Chant SAT NAM (Truth is my Idenity) 3xs on one breath.
Bring your hands in prayer mudra up to your forehead and bow to the floor to seal the work in your frontal lobe.
SO there it is Rhythm & Breath Yogis! I LOVE THIS MEDITATION. It's so sweet! Lets shmelt away our pain and love ourselves up! We deserve love in all its manifestations the way we want/need it in this lifetime.
Sat Nam!

Experiencing the Original You

"I want to give you that depth and that strength which is yours...the original you." - Yogi Bhajan

This meditation is challenging but will be well worth it. It is made up of three sections. And each section is NOT to be done for more than 3 minutes, so meditation is only 9 minutes as opposed to our usual 11 minute meditations. The first part entails a mudra (hand position) and a pranayam (breathing exercise) called "one minute breath." This breathing exercise is challenging and difficult to master. SO I suggest you begin with 10 seconds and work your way up to 20 seconds to gain control of the breath. You will know what I am talking about in a second.

PART ONE:
Interlace your fingers and turn your hands away from you so that palms are facing out. Extend your arms straight in front of you with no bend in the elbows. Your eyes are closed and focused on the tip of the nose. You are going to inhale for 10-20 seconds, Hold the breath for 10-20 seconds, then you are going to exhale for 10-20 seconds. Do this for 3 minutes.

NOTES: The exhaling is the most challenging part of this pranayam and may cause a little anxiety. The breath gives and releases prana (vital life force) inhaling associated with life and exhaling with death. So mentally explore what your fears are after you complete the meditation.

PART TWO:
Remain in the position with the focus on the nose. Inhale through your nose and exhale like a cannon. Project the exhale forward with as much force as possible. How much you can heal yourself will be in direct proportion to the strength of your breath. Continue this for 3 minutes.

NOTES: As you are exhaling, release anything consciously or unconsciously you would like to release. Send it out away from your physical, emotional and spiritual bodies back into the universe. Keep what serves you, send away what does not.

PART THREE:
Remain in the position. Inhale and hold your breath. Pump your navel as many times as you can until you cannot pump and hold the breath any longer then exhale. Immediately repeat again. Continue for three minutes.

TO FINISH:
Inhale hold the breath for 15 second, stretch your arms out as far as possible, putting pressure on your joined fingers. Exhale like a cannon. Repeat 2 more times.

Finally, point your index finger up with the thumb locking down the other three fingers and circulate the energy by spinning your fingers TOWARD you as fast as you can. Continue for 2 1/2 minutes.

Then relax..WEW!

TO CLOSE:

To finish bring your hands in Gyan Mudra. Thumbs pressed against your index finger. Other fingers are straight. Wrists are resting on your knees.

Tune out by chanting: SAT NAM (Truth is my Idenity) 3xs on one breath.

Bring your hands in prayer mudra up to your forehead and bow to the floor to seal the work in your frontal lobe.

There it is! Let me know when you begin and dont forget to check in with me via FACEBOOK about your progress and should anything come up. Also, should you miss a day...jump right back on ASAP! It happens! You are building a daily spiritual practice which is difficult. Part of the process is increasing your compassion for your self while gently encouraging your self along. Start over again at day one...stronger and more determined! Good luck!

SAT NAM!

Meditation to Heal Childhood Anger

This meditation was the first 40 day meditation I completed. It was given to me by my teacher Gurumukh as part of  my certification to become a Kundalini Yoga Instructor. Now, I would call it more of an initiation than anything. At the time the meditation was physically and emotionally painful but inititated the unfolding of my consiousness. I haven’t been the same since. That’s what I love about Kundalini Yoga and Sufism, there are no short cuts. There is only going through the fire , embodying and transcending your lessons to get to the next level of self-mastery. This meditation is for healing childhood anger. The anger one might have experienced as child could have been expressed, or repressed. We learn to validate, or negate, our emotions based on the responses from our elders and caretakers. As we burn through layers of karma, memories and thoughts may come to light. Allow yourself to feel these emotions associated with the thought and feelings. Give yourself the nurturing that you might have needed, or sought as a child, as a conscious adult. This meditation is a powerful act of re-parenting, releasing and forgiving. Also use the group, or the guide (yours truly), as a support to help you integrate your experience. That's what we are here for.

Stretch your arms out straight to the sides with no bend in the elbows.  Use your thumbs to lock down the mercury and Sun fingers (pinkie and ring fingers) and extend the Jupiter and Saturn fingers (index and middle fingers).  The palms face front with fingers pointing to the sides.

Inhale deeply by sucking air through your closed teeth and exhale through your nose. Continue for 11minutes.

To finish:  Inhale deeply, hold the breath for 10 seconds while you stretch your spine up and stretch your arms out to the sides, and exhale.  Repeat this sequence two more times.

NOTES:
This meditation will give you some subtle powers.  It will change you inside and out.  It can be done either in the morning or the evening, but if you do it in the evening, the next morning you will find that your whole caliber and energy is changed.

CLOSE:
To finish bring your hands in Gyan Mudra. Thumbs pressed against your index finger. Other fingers are straight. Wrists are resting on your knees.

Recite the  Warrior Healer's Affirmations
Tune out by chanting: SAT NAM (Truth is my Idenity) 3xs on one breath.

Bring your hands in prayer mudra up to your forehead and bow to the floor to seal the work in your frontal lobe.

So there it is R & B Yogis! Lets do the dang thang! Heal our child within, once and for all so we can get to less sufferin and more playin!

Meditation for Healing

This is a lil taste (literally) and an intro to Rhythm & Breath's on-line healing collective. Rhythm & Breath hosts 40 day meditations that are done individually and shared collectively through a private group on FACEBOOK. Requests to be added to the group may be sent in a message to JAMILA RAM RATTAN. This one day meditation is a diversion from our regular 40 day meditations. This is a meditation for healing and an exercise in self-less/full-ness. Instead of the universe using the heavy hand of experience to annihilate our egos, we are going to gently guide the hand with our projection and intention. Inshallah! God willing! For those that are new to the practice, have strayed, or crash and burned this is an opportunity for you to ease yourself back into the cipher. You may do the meditation anytime before midnight although there are optimum times for meditation. For more information on optimum times for meditation click here: ambrosial hours

You will also need an orange or tangerine. SO I will wait here "X" til you get your fruit.

Hhhmmm....hmmmmm...mmmm....

YOU READY?! Lets go...

We begin in "easy pose" which is not so easy especially for men who are usually tight in the hips, or knees. Your legs are crossed one in front of the other. If you are unable to sit comfortably in this position, you can prop your buns on a pillow which helps alleviate some of the discomfort. IT IS NOT HALF OR FULL LOTUS POSITION.

Take the orange in your left hand and bring it to eye level. Your right hand is over your heart. You are gazing at the orange through your eyes which are 1/10th open.

The MANTRA:

SAT NAM / SAT NAM / SAT NAM / SAT NAM / SAT NAM / SAT NAM / WHAH HE GURU (Meaning "Truth is my identity. Great beyond description is the majesty of God.")

Chant on the fruit for 14.5mins. Intending, receiving and projecting the highest healing energy into the fruit and your heart. Once you have completed the prescribed time of 14.5 minutes. You are going to INHALE and hold onto the breath for a count of 27 seconds EXHALE.

Bring your hands to GYAN MUDRA. Thumbs pressing against your index finger with othr fingers straight. Wrists are resting on your knees with elbows straight. Recite the WARRIOR HEALERS AFFIRMATIONS. To learn them click here: warrior healer's daily affirmations

Close the meditation with 3 LONG SAT NAMS. Chanted on one breath 3xs. (Sat Nam meaning Truth is my Identity).

Bring your hands in prayer mudra up to your forehead and bow to the floor to seal the work in your frontal lobe.

Now you are going to peel the orange and offer it to your love, lover or beloved! If they are not near by, offer it to someone you feel is in need of healing. What is more special than that?! In healing, we are healed. And in healing our selves, those in our karmic group are healed. Its a reciprocal process just like the cosmic orbit. A truly miraculous process...

So there it is my beloved yogis! Any questions, comments or concerns...you know where to find me.

Be sure to drop a lil sumthin in the "beggars bowl" at the bottom of the page. The suggested heart exchange is $5 MINIMUM. Your contributions help keep donation-based kundalini fires burning.

"The student that arrives empty handed leaves empty handed." Yogi Bhajan said that, not I.

Personal Daily Meditation-Sadhana

In Kundalini circles, traditional sadhana consists of these elements:

• It is done during the ambrosial hours
• One recites Japji: Seik Holy Prayer
• 30 minute Kundalini Yoga Set
• Meditation. Usually the Aquarian Sadhana Mantras but most yogis do their own personal meditations at this time.

In my humble opinion, if you have already a spiritual or religious tradition, and if you are content with it and it is working for you thus far, stick to those in lieu of appropriating a culture not your own. For me, the most vital part of personal sadhana is keeping to a daily meditation practice. That is what sadhana literally means: personal daily spiritual practice. Ultimately, the practice is for you. And from there, your personal healing will have a ripple effect on those around you. The very reason why  warrior healers affirm: "I raise my own consciousness that of my family my community and the cosmos: my existence is not in vain."

Yogic science calls for meditation to be for a certain amount of days and a certain amount of time to achieve desired effects:

Significance of time:

• 3 minutes-affects the electromagnetic field and the circulation of the blood
• 11 minutes-changes the nerves and the glandular system
• 22 minutes-balances the three minds, and they begin to work together
• 31 minutes-allows the glands, breath and concentration to affect all the cells of the body
• 62 minutes-changes the grey matter of the brain
• 2 1/2 hours-changes the psyche in its correlation with the surrounding magnetic field so that the subconscious mind is held firmly in the new pattern by the surrounding universal mind.

Significance of the amount of days:

• 40 days-changes a habit
• 90 days-confirms the habit
• 120 days-the new habit is who you are
• 1000 days-you have mastered the new habit

As your subconscious is cleared out, random "stuff" will come up: from what you are going  to eat when you are done meditating, to memories of early childhood trauma, or even past life experiences. Meditation is your chance to bring into consciousness what "is" even if it lies in the recesses of your mind, it still effects you daily. Becoming aware of your "stuff" is an opportunity to exercise detachment from it. Detachment...not in the sense, of being without emotion, or love. But detached from the outcome of the experience. And to see beyond the emotion to seek out the karmic lesson.

We incarnate to heal. Daily meditation is an opportunity to take much needed sacred time, for yourself, to connect to your divinity. It's a gift to your Self, to just listen and receive. Why wait for others to give to you, when you can give to your self. You deserve this...the gift of meditation, at the very least.

Every deposit into your karmic bank, brings new incites into the fabric of your being and your divine purpose. The memories and the emotions associated with the memories may hurt at times. But if we just stick with the practice, we will get closer to living a more honest, complete, and fulfilled life.

If you are interested in taking on a 40 day personal meditation, the suggested heart donation is $50. I can be contacted at: rhythmandbreath@gmail.com. To get an idea of what a Rhythm & Breath meditation entails, you can check out my YouTube channel.

MUDRAS

Mudras are hand positions that guide energy flow and reflexes to the brain. There are 72,000 meridian points in our hands that are directly connected to the brain. In the Sufi tradition, there are 72,000 veils between us and the Most High. Each area in the hand connects to a certain part of the body or brain representing different emotions and behaviors. Each finger relates to a planetary energy and quality each planet represents:

Thumb=The ego, or persona, of the individual.
Index=Jupiter=Wisdom
Middle= Saturn=Patience “The Task Master”
Ring= Sun=Vitality
Pinky= Mercury=Communication

When they are stimulated by being pressed up against each other, it alters thought patterns and direct energies to burn karma and heal our subconscious mind.

Death of the Physical Body

Death is not an easy transition for the departed nor for those left behind. Especially, if one does not possess a spiritual foundation and practice to help one consciously prepare for death (directly or indirectly) as we live our life. Death forces us to confront our attachments to the material plane and make us question whether or not we are living up to our human and Divine potential. Dont wait for death to touch you...live with conscious awareness. Every transition is a preparation for death, even in sleep our souls touch death. Life is a tenuous and precious gift. Dont squander it.

I remember doing this meditation at Golden Bridge LA, when Yogi Bhajan made his transition. It was so beautiful to hear the mantra firing off individually and collectively as yogis would run out of air, inhale and chant again. But, it was not until death touched me a little closer (when my husband made his transition) that I felt the power of the meditation and the significance of death both symbolic and real. It is healing for the departed soul but also helps those left behind in the bereavement process.

Yogi Bhajan instructs that chanting Akal for 3-17 days for the soul who has physically died assists them to cross over the electromagnetic field. Eleven minutes minimum, but ideally at least 5 people chanting Akal 31 minutes a day for 17 days starting the day of death.

Sitting in easy pose, rub your hands together and bring them to prayer pose.
Begin this meditation as you begin every meditation with the Adi Mantra:
ONG NA MO GURU DEV NAMO 3x's
(which means I bow to the Divine wisdom/teacher within)

Mudra: Hold your hands in GYAN MUDRA
(press your index finger against your thumb, wrists on your knees, palms facing up)

Take a deep breath and chant AKAL on one breath.
(which means that which never dies)

If you are doing this meditation in a group, keep to your own time and breath. Keep the mantra continuous vibrating it into the cosmos relentlessly (like a gong meditation). Sending the message to the departed that, "you did not die...keep on going...onto the next lesson. I let you go."

Continue chanting for 31 minutes. When you are done, send into the cosmos words of encouragement to the departed using their full given birth name.

To close
Rub your hands together and bring them to prayer pose.

Chant on one breath
LONG SAT NAM 3x's
(which means Truth is my identity)
Bring your hands to your forehead and your hands and forehead to the ground

AMEN

and so it is...

And DONT forget to thank God, Allah, HaShem for this trial. Light and dark cannot exist without the other.

May this meditation shine Light upon you in this time of darkness. And grant you peace on your journey. Seek Pure Light. It's your h(OM)

-Luz
